Nearly everything else in a bathroom disappears behind the finish — the pipework, the boarding, the hours of first fix. The tiling is the finish. It is what you look at every day, and it is the first thing to show whether the room was built with care. Mickey has tiled bathrooms for 25 years, from family bathrooms and en-suites to walk-in showers and wet rooms, for homeowners and for the trades who fit bathrooms for a living.

What actually makes a wet room work
Tile and grout are not what keep a wet room dry. Grout is porous; the waterproof layer is underneath, between the structure and the tile, and by the time a room is finished you cannot see whether it is there. A wet room stands or falls on that hidden build-up — which is exactly why it is worth asking any quote what is going in under the tile.
The floor is the other half of it. A level-access shower has to be shaped so that every part of it runs to the outlet, and the tiling has to follow those falls precisely — around the drain, four planes of floor meet at one point, which is why you see large tiles cut on the diagonal there. Those cuts are on show forever. They are the difference between a wet room and a wet floor.
Not every walk-in shower needs the full wet-room build-up: a low-profile tray with the floor tiled up to it gives much of the same look with less below the surface. Which is right for your room depends on the floor you have — ask us before you order anything.
The quiet work
Three things that decide how long a bathroom lasts
None of these appear in a showroom photograph, and every one of them matters more than the tile you choose.
- The substrate
- A bathroom fails from underneath. Timber floors move, plaster and plasterboard behave differently when a room runs hot and wet twice a day, and rigid tile on a background that flexes cracks at the joints first. The checking and preparation before the first tile goes down is invisible in every finished photograph — which is why it is the part worth asking about.
- Movement joints
- Where the floor meets the walls, in internal corners and wherever the surface changes plane, a bathroom needs joints that flex rather than grout that cracks. Solid-grouting the lot looks identical on day one. The difference appears a winter later, as a hairline crack tracing the corner of the shower.
- Grout and sealing
- Grout colour and joint width change how a tiled room reads as much as the tile does — the same tile with a dark grout is a different bathroom. Porcelain needs no sealing; natural stone needs sealing and different care from day one. We will tell you what the material you are considering actually asks of you before you commit to it.
Large-format tile
Big tiles are unforgiving — that is rather the point
Large-format tile is what designers specify and what most high-end bathrooms are finished in, and it punishes shortcuts. The bigger the tile, the less a wall can hide: a background flat enough for a small tile will throw a long slab into lippage — one edge sitting proud of the next — that you will catch in the light every time you walk in.
Setting out matters more, not less. Where the full tile lands, where the cut lands, whether wall courses line up with the floor, whether the niche sits on a joint or in the middle of one — all of it is decided before anything is fixed. Veined and directional slabs are laid out dry and sequenced first, so the pattern flows rather than jumps. That is where the time goes on a bathroom like the one alongside, and it is the part a cheap quote quietly leaves out.

Most of our bathroom work is exactly what it sounds like: the family bathroom, the en-suite, the downstairs WC. The same setting out that carries a large-format wall also makes a two-metre cloakroom feel considered rather than clad — small rooms show every decision, because you are never more than an arm's length from any of them.

Bathroom tiling questions we get asked
Do you tile walls and floors, or just one?
Both, and either. Full bathrooms are the usual job — walls and floor together, set out so the two line up — but we also take on floors only or walls only, which is common when a plumber or builder has the rest of the room in hand.
Do you work directly for homeowners, or only through the trades?
Both. Homeowners come to us directly, and plumbers, builders and designers bring us onto their own projects for the tiling. Either way the same person sets out your bathroom.
Can you price a bathroom without visiting?
We can give you an estimate from the square metres of wall and floor and the size of tile you are considering. The price is confirmed once we have seen the room — bathrooms hide too much behind the suite for a firm number sight unseen.
